January 2007: Open for Business: Paint it Red
"My appetite has picked up like crazy lately, and now I know why," says Michelle Herzog, owner of Colori. The paint and design boutique will host a party in honor of the color red on February 1, and for the occasion, Herzog has gussied up the store's walls in Diva, Bang!, Lip Service and Vixen--all variants of the shade of honor. "Red stimulates appetite," Herzog explains, "so it's a great color to use in the dining room." Such colorful insights have earned Herzog nicknames like "Color Therapist" and the "Oracle of Color." But before she was crowned with a rainbow of tiaras, Michelle was on a decidedly less eye-catching career path. After
accompanying her father to his road-construction sites as a child, Herzog founded her own construction company in 1999. Michelle noticed a gap in the market when she started seeking a color for her bathroom walls: "I must've tried ten different greens," she remembers. "It was so hard to see what the paint would look like based on a sample of printer's lacquer." When a friend introduced her to C2 Collections of Color, a company that offers samples made of real paint, Michelle's color woes were over and the idea for a new business was born. With the aim to "make buying paint fashionable and fun, like shopping for shoes," Michelle opened Colori last May. The store features a light box with halogen, incandescent and fluorescent lights (so customers can see paint in different intensities of light), a paint bar where customers can sip coffee while their order is prepared, and a children's area for the wee patrons.
